It originally stood at the end of the peninsula caused by silting currently (2020) about two kilometers to the Atlantic has moved.
The lighthouse was originally built as a beacon in 1898 by the Schutztruppe for German South West Africa . A simple signal tower followed, which was erected by South African troops after the surrender in 1915/16 . This was replaced in 1932 by a new lighthouse originally intended for Durban . In 1961 the current beacon was installed.
