Dick's Picks Volume 5 is a Live - triple album of the band Grateful Dead .

history

The songs from the album were recorded on December 26, 1979 at the Oakland Auditorium Arena in Oakland , California and released in May 1996.

The concert was a benefit event for the Seva Foundation , an organization that works to solve cultural problems around the world. Former Dead guitarist Bob Weir was and is a member of this organization.

Dick's Picks Volume 5 was the first album from the Dick's Picks series that played a complete concert. This was also the first Dick's Picks album with keyboardist Brent Mydland , who only joined the band in April 1979.

The concert took place between the albums Shakedown Street (1977) and Go to Heaven (1980), so that the band's psychedelic rock phase was over. In addition, the songs Alabama Getaway and Looks Like Rain were tested and practiced for the album Go to Heaven . Furthermore, for the first time in almost two years, the song Uncle John's Band was played live again. The song opened and ended the second set of the concert. Also Brokedown Palace was listed for the first time in two years.

These versions of Uncle John's Band and Shakedown Street were used for the commercial sampler A Glimpse Of The Vault , which contains one or two songs from each Dick's Pick album 1-5 .

The name Dick's Pick comes from the official recording archivist of the band Dick Latvala , who started the series and selected the songs for it until his death in 1999.

Like the previous albums in the Dick's Pick series, this one also has a caveat emptor warning:

" This compact disc has been digitally remastered directly from the original half track stereo analog tape. It is a snapshot of history, not a modern professional recording, and may therefore exhibit some technical anomalies and the unavoidable effects of the ravages of time. "

criticism

Dick's Picks Volume 4 received 4 out of 5 stars from All Music Guide and The Music Box and 3.5 out of 5 stars from Rolling Stone .
