Dick's Picks Volume 10 is a Live - triple album of the band Grateful Dead .

history

The songs on the album were recorded on December 29 and 30, 1977 at the Winterland Music Theater in San Francisco and released in February 1998 on their own label, Grateful Dead Records .

In 1970 the Deads appeared at 70 concerts, four of them in December at the Winterland Music Theater. Recordings from December 29th and 30th were used, while no recordings from December 27th and 31st were used. Most of the songs except the last four come from the third CD on December 29th. Thus, for the most part, the entire concert of that day was published, only after the song Good Lovin 'there was a cut and the songs It Must Have Been the Roses and Sunrise were skipped.

In terms of time, this album was recorded between the greatest hits album What a Long Strange Trip It's Been and the studio album Shakedown Street . From this studio album the songs Good Lovin ' and New Minglewood Blues were used, none of which were written by a Dead member and Good Lovin' had been in the band's live repertoire since 1969 . From the recently released album Terrapin Station , the eponymous song Terrapin Station and Estimated Prophet was used. In addition, the medley from China Cat / I Know You Rider was played for the first time since October 20, 1974. Overall, this medley lasts over 50 minutes, as it consists of Playing in the Band / China Cat Sunflower / I Know You Rider / China Doll / Playing Jam / Drums / Not Fade Away / Playing in the Band .

The name Dick's Pick comes from the official recording archivist of the band Dick Latvala , who started the series and selected the songs for it until his death in 1999.

Like the previous albums in the Dick's Pick series, this one also has a caveat emptor warning:

" This release was digitally mastered directly from the original half track 7.5 ips analog tapes. It is a snapshot of history, not a modern professional recording, and although it may exhibit some minor technical anomalies, it is nothing more or less than just exactly perfect. "

This warning relates directly to a statement made by Bob Weir before this concert when there were technical problems and these were successfully resolved:

" We're gonna try to get everything just exactly perfect. . . on account of our new name is the Just Exactly Perfect Brothers Band. "

criticism

In general, Dick's Picks Volume 10 received an average rating. The album received 3 out of 5 stars from All Music Guide and Rolling Stone . Only The Music Box gave it 5 out of 5 stars.
