Dickel is a German family name .

Origin and meaning

The origin of the family name Dickel has not been clearly established; there are several possibilities. The l suffix of the name (thick- el ) has in this case a diminutive and thus a possible patronymic naming based on Dick back. In particular, the following formations are discussed:

  • Likewise, the family names Dick and Dickel may have originated from a nickname in the sense of Dicker Mensch , the latter in turn with an l suffix.
  • Dickel could also be derived from thicket, dike or pond as a dwelling name.
  • Finally, a derivation from the name Benedictus is also possible.

The family name is mentioned in Hessian and Wittgenstein documents from the middle of the 15th century (see documents from 1451, 1489, 1493, 1495, 1508 and 1515). All but the most recent document refer to places in the Hessian districts of Gießen and Vogelsbergkreis.

    1. North Rhine-Westphalia: around 65% (especially in the Siegen-Wittgenstein district, but also in the Hochsauerlandkreis and the Märkisches Kreis)
    2. Hesse: around 20% (especially in the Schwalm-Eder district and in the Vogelsberg district)

The name is not common in Austria and Switzerland. From an international perspective, there are high distribution areas outside of Germany in New Zealand, Argentina, Great Britain and the USA.
