Abbot Didacus Ströbele, painting before 1733

Didacus Ströbele OPraem (* 1686 in Biberach , † 1748 in the Abbey Wadgassen ) was in the years 1719 to 1733 of 19 Reichsabt the Prämonstratenserreichsabtei Schussenried in today's Bad Schussenried in Upper Swabia .

Life

Didacus Ströbele was elected abbot in 1719 at the age of 33 . He had chapels built in Eggatsweiler , Attenweiler , Wattenweiler and Eggmannsried . On the recommendation of the abbess of the Sießen monastery at the time , in 1728 he commissioned the new construction of the Steinhausen pilgrimage church to the brothers Johann Baptist and Dominikus Zimmermann from Wessobrunn . In 1733, after a surprising visit by the Vicar General of the Premonstratensians, Abbot Hermann Vogler, he was deposed from the then Reichsabbey Mönchsrot and banished to the monastery of All Saints in the Black Forest , where he stayed for two years. From here, Ströbele was taken to the Premonstratensian Abbey of Wadgassen on the Saar in 1735 , where he lived for thirteen years and died in 1748. The Schussenried monastery chronicle reports in this regard:

“While the abbot's followers protested against the sentence in chapters, Abbot Didacus was brought to Marchtal by the visitors, then to All Saints' Day for two years, ad poenitentiam seriam agendam. Then he came to Wadegas in Lorraine, where 500 guilders had to be sent annually from Schussenried to the pension. There he lived piously, exemplary and penitent until the end of his life in 1748. "

The reasons for his removal were not mentioned in the visitation report. One possible reason for his dismissal is said to have been his unsettled character. His general way of life was a nuisance for his colleagues in the Swabian Imperial Prelate College. Another reason for depreciation could have been the total construction costs of the Steinhausen pilgrimage church of 47,000 guilders (9,000 guilders were approved). In the later economic books of the monastery, however, no higher indebtedness of the abbey above the normal level is recognizable. There are also no records of the monastery that indicate an impoverishment of the territory of the imperial abbey due to the new building of Steinhausen.

In his diary, Ströbele wrote self-defendingly with regard to the accusation of wasting money:

“Everything to the glory of God and Beatae Virginis Mariae! But if someone from the posterity (who find such larger church editions every now and then in my Diario and Abbey editions book) would say that since my government I could have applied the money better via Monasteri; only God and his dearest mother and other saints do not allow anything to be done in vain - it all happened ad honorem Dei. coat of arms

Abbot Didacus's coat of arms is divided into blue and red and a gold star on top, and a plume of feathers above a mountain of three. The description by Rueß , he writes of three red flowers on a green background, does not correspond to the portrayal.
