Didymaotus lapidiformis is the only plant of monotypic genus Didymaotus from the family of aizoaceae (Aizoaceae). The botanical name of the genus is derived from the Greek words δίδυμος (didymos) for "double" and aotos for "blossom" and indicates that two flowers often appear in plants at the same time. The epithet of the species is derived from the Latin words "lapidis" for "stone" and "formis" for "shaped" and means stone-shaped.

Didymaotus lapidiformis grows compactly, rarely branches and usually survives during the resting phase with a single, closely pressed pair of leaves. One of the leaves of a pair of leaves is usually slightly larger than the other. The greyish-green to reddish, deltoid leaves are fused together at the base and form a diamond when viewed from above . With up to 40 millimeters, they are roughly the same length, width and height.

The individual, fragrant flowers bearing bracts appear on proleptic side shoots on one or both sides of the new central pair of leaves. They reach a diameter of up to 35 millimeters. There are six roughly identical, clearly keel-shaped sepals . The approximately 100 purple-colored petals become shorter from the outside (about 12 millimeters) to the inside (about 5 millimeters). The approximately 200 to 230 violet stamens are briefly papilous at the base . The nectaries are fused in a ring shape, they are wreath-like and dark brownish-green. Didymaotus lapidiformis blooms in their homeland in October.

The six- (rarely seven-) pinnate capsule fruits are similar to those of the genus Titanopsis , measure about 10 millimeters in diameter and remain on the plants. The smooth yellowish-brown seeds are rounded.

Systematics, number of chromosomes and distribution

Didymaotus lapidiformis is widespread in the Tanqua Karoo near Ceres in the South African province of Western Cape and grows in fine brown slate . The annual rainfall is around 200 millimeters, with the majority falling in the months of March and November.
