The bond (original title: The Bond ) is an American propaganda film by Charles Chaplin from 1918 , which should support the sale of war bonds ( Liberty Bonds ) for the First World War .

action

The "bond of friendship": Charlie meets a friend at a street lamp who holds him up for a long time and then asks for money, which Charlie finally gives him.

The "bond of marriage": Charlie finds a woman attractive on the street. She seduces him with her charms. In the next scene the couple is led to the wedding by their friend. After the wedding, Pastor Charlie asks for a donation; he even comes to the door twice with the donation hat.

The “most important bond” is the “bond of freedom” (Liberty Bond): The German Kaiser tears the arm of the Statue of Liberty down. An American soldier comes to their defense and fights the emperor down.

Charlie gives Uncle Sam a sack of money for "Liberty Bonds" and Uncle Sam gives it to "Industry", which in turn equips soldiers with a gun. Uncle Sam thanks Charlie and he immediately buys a war loan, which is used to equip a sailor. In the final scene, Charlie knocks down the gesticulating emperor with a large hammer with "Liberty Bonds" written on it.

background

In April 1918, Chaplin, together with Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford , opened the campaign for the third American war bond in Washington and went on a successful advertising tour with both of them. He was asked to make a short commercial for the purchase of Liberty Bonds so that it could be used to advertise where he did not appear in person. At the same time, Chaplin was busy producing his war satire Shoulder Arms , in which Edna Purviance, Albert Austin and Chaplin's brother Sydney - also in the role of the German emperor - participated. The Bond was made in the fall of 1918 for the "Liberty Loan Committee" with these actors. The film - a series of short skits - plays with the ambiguous meaning of the English word "bond", which can denote both a bond and a bond . The pantomime skits were shot against a black background with a few simple props. It premiered on October 4, 1918. Just two weeks after The Bond , Shoulder Arms was also released.
