The Vagabond (Original title: The Vagabond ) is an American comedy film directed by Charles Chaplin from 1916 .

action

Charlie Chaplin is a street musician. He's playing his violin behind a bar. Suddenly a brass band appears in front of the bar, competing with it. Charlie continues to play his violin unimpressed and with his hat successfully collects the money from the bar guests, to the displeasure of the orchestra leader, who sees himself being deprived of his wages. An excited chase begins and Charlie flees the city.

With his violin he comes to a gypsy carriage in front of which a girl is washing clothes. She was kidnapped by gypsies and falls in love with Charlie, who serenades her. However, the gypsy boss separates the couple and pursues Charlie. Charlie finally succeeds in eliminating the entire gypsy gang from a tree hiding place and freeing the girl. Together they flee in one of the gypsy wagons.

Charlie washes the girl and prepares breakfast while the girl goes to fetch water. There she meets an artist who paints her. The picture becomes a success in an exhibition and leads the family on the trail of the kidnapped girl. The family picks up the girl from Charlie. But the girl doesn't want to live without Charlie, her savior. She returns and the two are reunited.
