content
Gottfried Böhm , one of the most important architects in Germany, is still working on building projects every day at the age of 94. His sons Stephan, Peter and Paul managed to step out of their father's shadow with their own outstanding buildings. During the filming, Elisabeth, who is now suffering from dementia - Gottfried Böhm's wife and also an architect - dies, an important source of inspiration and the emotional center of the family.
The film documents the work, the buildings and the life of the Böhms. He draws an intimate portrait of the family of architects.
Emergence
Staerkle-Drux had a long-standing friendship with the Böhm family through his German mother and her Cologne relatives. He saw "in Gottfried Böhm [...] despite the great age difference an artist of the same age, curious and impressive in spirit." Staerkle-Drux lived with the Böhm family in Cologne for more than two years for the film work.
Reviews
“Maurizius Staerkle-Drux deals with the various architectural universes of the Böhms with an admirable visual instinct and also approaches the subtle differences between his protagonists' image of himself and that of others. The title of the film can by all means be taken literally: It is primarily about the architecture of a family, only then about the portrait of a prominent architectural family. "
“Unlike Harun Farocki's Sauerbruch Hutton Architects , Die Böhms largely excludes insights into the business background of the profession from observation. Existing conflicts with clients are also only briefly touched upon. So the film remains an interesting, but disappointingly blurred group picture of the patriarchal German educated middle class. And it is not surprising that, according to the press booklet, the filmmaker is one of the other friends of the Böhm family. "
