Literary template

The film is based on the novel The Turn of the Screw by Henry James , here in the first edition from 1898

The film is based on the novel The Turn of the Screw by Henry James , which was first published from January to April 1898 as a serial in the weekly Collier’s with illustrations by Eric Pape . A book was published for the first time in 1908. The novel was published under the titles The Rotation of the Screw and Translated into German to the extreme .

At the time when James was writing the novella, the author was unable to write due to a wrist disease and had to rely on a secretary to dictate the story to. The story of the governess, who is in charge of looking after two children, Miles and Flora, is told by an unnamed narrator. The boy has been expelled from boarding school for an unspecified offense. Over time, the narrator repeatedly observes ghost apparitions in the country estate , in which she finally believes she recognizes her own predecessor and a former servant, who both perished under unspecified circumstances. She is convinced that the children also see these apparitions and are in contact with the spirits, but do not tell her about them.

The title The Turn of the Screw refers to a scene in which the nanny Flora watches as she builds a wooden ship and tries to screw a mast into the hull, which the nanny is determined to keep her from doing.

production

Staff and cast

James' novella was adapted for the film by twin brothers Carey and Chad Hayes . Directed by Floria Sigismondi , who moved the plot for her film to the 1990s and based her work primarily on Jack Clayton's adaptation of the Henry James novel Schloss des Schreckens from 1961, Sigismondi said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly . The filmmaker continued: “What I particularly liked is that the nanny is the focus of the film and that it's not just about the things that happen in the house. I went back to that, modernized the story and made it my own version. "

The roles of the children Miles and Flora were cast with Finn Wolfhard and Brooklynn Prince .

Film music, marketing and publishing

The score was composed by Nathan Barr . A soundtrack album containing the new song Mother by Courtney Love and pieces by Lawrence Rothman , Empress Of , Mitski , Soccer Mommy , Warpaint and other artists is set to be released by KRO Records / Sony Masterworks.
