Mitski Miyawaki (born September 27, 1990 ), mostly known as Mitski , is an indie rock musician and singer-songwriter with American-Japanese roots.

She studied composition in Purchase at the State University of New York and released her first two albums in the meantime. Her three following albums received positive reviews from music critics and were also commercially successful, notably her album Be the Cowboy , released in 2018 . Mitski's expressive music is characterized by an unconventional structure and its emotional, profound lyrics.

Childhood and youth

Mitski Miyawaki was born Mitsuki Frances Laycock in Japan on September 27, 1990, to a Japanese mother and an American father. She moved frequently while growing up due to her father's work in the United States Department of State and lived in many countries - including Turkey, China, Malaysia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo - before eventually settling in New York .

Career

Beginnings

At the age of nineteen Mitski first enrolled at Hunter College to study film. During this time she began to write music herself. Mitski, who had previously had music lessons , dropped out and moved to the State University of New York Music Conservatory in Purchase, where she took the studio composition course . During her time at university, she recorded her first albums ( Lush in 2012 and Retired from Sad, New Career in Business in 2013 ) as study projects and published them herself on the Internet. In doing so, she benefited from being able to work with many different musicians at the Conservatory.

After graduating, she was the singer of the short-lived prog metal band Voice Coils and began working on her third studio album. Bury Me at Makeout Creek was released on November 11, 2014 by indie label Double Double Whammy; the title is a quote from the character Milhouse from the Simpsons . The album represented a sonic departure from Mitski's orchestral and classical piano sound that shaped her first two albums. In doing so, she wanted to create a sound that would be better suited for small shows in basement rooms and sound less academic. She learned to play the guitar for the album, and all songs were written within a year. On April 7, 2015, Don Giovanni Records re- released the album .

Puberty 2

Mitski signed with the independent label Dead Oceans on December 22, 2015 , before releasing new music the following year. On March 1, 2016, she announced her fourth studio album Puberty 2 and released lead single Your Best American Girl . The album was recorded over a two week period at Acme Studios and produced by longtime collaborator Patrick Hyland. She says that when she wrote, she thought less about the performance of the music than she did on the previous album, compared to Bury Me at Makeout Creek . Puberty 2 has received critical acclaim from music reviews.

In 2016 her song Francis Forever was covered by the character Marceline in the episode The Music Hole (in German "Der Bandcontest") of the Adventure Time series . On February 21, 2017, the Pixies announced tour dates with Mitski as the opening act . On May 1, a compilation album of 100 songs by various artists was released under the title Our First 100 Days , which includes Mitski's cover of One Direction's song Fireproof . The collaboration raised funds for organizations that saw their concerns threatened by the election of Donald Trump . Mitski covered the song in 2015, but this version has since been taken offline. Mitski also sang for the charity album 7 inches For Planned Parenthood to Frank Sinatra -Klassiker I'm a Fool to Want You one . On October 4th, Lorde announced that Mitski would be the opening act on selected dates as part of her melodrama world tour. The short film Sitting with Mitski in the lead role was released on November 1, 2017, and in April 2018 Mitski and the band Xiu Xiu released a song from the soundtrack of the sci-fi comedy How to Talk to Girls at Parties .

Be the cowboy

On May 14, 2018, their fifth studio album, Be the Cowboy, was released for pre-order without prior notice , and the lead single Geyser was released on the same day along with the accompanying music video. after two more singles, Be the Cowboy finally appeared on August 17th, again on Dead Oceans. The album, which she in turn produced with Hyland, received many positive reviews. Various major online music media such as Pitchfork , Vulture and Consequence of Sound named it album of the year.

In January 2020 Mitski released the song Cop Car , an unreleased track from the soundtrack of the film The Turning , which she had performed live since 2014.

Music style and themes

Mitski, who in addition to her singing also plays the piano and guitar, has repeatedly changed her musical voice over the course of her career. The music created during her studies was described as “fragile and highly dramatic”, which also had a “simple, melodic sweetness”. Rolling Stone called Bury Me at Makeout Creek "a country album at its core ". Laut.de placed their first four albums “between tender piano music and rugged rock sounds”, others described them as “witty, springy punk ”. In Be the Cowboy, Musikexpress spoke of "90s indie rock, dry and rough, without many layers of vocal and harmony, but always original in dealing with neighboring genres such as ambient and pop ". A recurring feature in their music is the unconventional structure of their songs, which keep increasing from start to finish. In an interview she explained that her “sense of balance is not necessarily symmetrical”.

The lyrical quality of their lyrics was also particularly praised. It is possible for her to sketch an entire relationship with just a few details. Often her songs are about loneliness , as is very explicit in the song Nobody . In the opinion of the music critics, she knows how to convey great intimacy while remaining distanced and controlled. She slips into fictional roles, experiments with narrative forms and defends herself against overly autobiographical interpretations of her texts. She keeps her private life top secret. She explained that she does not want to be perceived as an "emotional" musician, as she associates it with a derogatory and overreaching attitude. Another common theme in her music is her identity and role as an American with Japanese roots, as in the song Your Best American Girl .
