occupation

Die Bettwurst (also Kieler Bettwurst ) is an early film by Rosa von Praunheim from 1971. Two years later von Praunheim produced a sequel with the same leading actors called “Die Berliner Bettwurst”. The title refers to a neck roll known as bedwurst that the leading actress gives her boyfriend for Christmas.

action

The North German Luzi speaks to Dietmar from Mannheim on the Kiel promenade, because he has had change out of his pocket. She promises to show him the city. The two meet more often and, among other things, go to a tea dance . While looking at a photo album in Luzi's apartment, Dietmar confesses his love to Luzi. She reciprocates his feelings. Dietmar and Luzi live together as a couple and enjoy hours of unclouded happiness until Dietmar Luzi confesses his “dark past” among “easy girls” and “heavy boys”.

Dietmar's former accomplices kidnap Luzi. Dietmar can free them and shoots a gangster. Then Luzi and Dietmar get on a plane. The second gangster opens the door for them.

Narrative style

The film is characterized by the strange way of speaking of the main actors, especially Dietmar's Mannheim dialect and very redundant dialogues. In addition to the beach promenade, the beach, a restaurant and a cow meadow, the settings are primarily the rooms in Luzi's apartment. The viewer often gets the impression that the actors are improvising or are only told what to say during the shoot.
