action

14-year-old Alyssa has lived with her grandmother Lucy since her mother's death a year ago. Since then, Alyssa has increasingly closed herself off from the outside world and begins to rebel at school, which is why she is finally on leave. To regain access to her, Lucy travels with her to a small island in the Bahamas , where Hawk, Alyssa's father, whom she assumed was dead and whom she never met, works as a dolphin researcher. However, the first encounter does not provoke the desired reactions on either Alyssa's or Hawk's side. Hawk's friend Tamika and her father Daniel manage to build trust in Alyssa and bring the girl closer to both life on the island and her father's life.

Hawk's research on dolphin understanding and communication is about to end, however, as a local entrepreneur convinces the local council that a tourist park would be more useful to the island than the research station, which is almost unanimously approved by the residents. Meanwhile, Alyssa discovers that she, like her father, can communicate with the dolphins and makes friends with a wild specimen. This friendship is initially prevented by Hawk, as he considers the wild dolphin to be unpredictable. However, when members of the local council and supporters of the tourist park appear at the research facility to close it, Alyssa appears with the wild dolphin. She frees the two dolphins from the research facility and shows those present that she can communicate with the animals. Convinced of this, the islanders speak out against the amusement park. A little later, Alyssa and Hawk jointly open a facility that offers not only research but also therapeutic swimming with the dolphins.

reception

For the German Children's and Youth Film Center , The Dolphin Whisperer is a "sensitive father-daughter story in front of an impressive backdrop with an informative background". The Cinema editorial team describes the film as "moving and with great pictures". The Rotten Tomatoes website refers to 17 reviews of the film, of which only 5 are classified as “fresh” (positive), the remaining 12 as “rotten” (negative). For the American organization Common Sense Media , which judges television according to educational and child-friendly motives, The Dolphin Whisperer is a "heartfelt" film with "good intentions", but which turns out to be a bit "glossy" and "tensionless". The character of Alyssa is "inspiring", but it is also criticized that she smokes at the beginning of the film and later seems to drink alcohol.

Awards

At the 2007 International Family Film Festival at Raleigh Studios in Los Angeles , The Dolphin Whisperer received an award in the "Drama Feature" category, and lead actress Carly Schroeder received the award in the "Best Child Actor" category.
