Die Geissens - A terribly glamorous family is a television program broadcast by RTL II with the millionaire family Robert and Carmen Geiss in the lead role.

concept

The program purports to document the trips and the luxurious everyday life of the Geiss family. The broadcaster and the Geiss family claim that the format is essentially a documentation of real family life. Critics, on the other hand, see a pseudo-documentary in the program . In this it is pointed out that - in contrast to the everyday life of a large part of the population - paid work only plays a subordinate role for the Geissens; predominantly the protagonists are portrayed in everyday and leisure activities in the jet set environment.

family

The Geiss family comes from Cologne ; she has her main residence in the Principality of Monaco and holiday homes in Saint-Tropez , Kitzbühel and Valberg . Robert Geiss, who founded the sportswear label “ Uncle Sam ” together with his brother Michael in January 1986, and his brother sold all of the company's shares, each amounting to 50 percent, in January 1995 for an estimated 140 million DM . His wife Carmen Geiss was voted "Miss Fitness" in 1982. Her two daughters attend an international school in Monaco. At the beginning of March 2013, Robert Geiss returned to the fashion business with the new Roberto Geissini brand . While Robert Geiss' parents, Grandma Margret and Grandpa Reinhold, appeared in the first seasons, they can no longer be seen in the more recent episodes. The reason is a falling out with Carmen Geiss, which is why there has been no contact between the families for years.

content

In the series, everyday family life is primarily portrayed, be it shopping to buy luxury goods , buying representative real estate or at a children's birthday party. The family presents itself with its simply structured Cologne mentality in a sophisticated world in the form of reality TV . She gives insights into her daily routine, which is characterized by luxury life.

reception

The show was reloaded several times in the comedy show Switch and satirized in the 1LIVE comedy series Global Geiss .

The world characterized the world of the Geissens as "... always a little too big, too bling-bling, too much glitter". This is how you imagine “the 'rich people' in Kleinappelsbüttel” ”. Time and again, “the petty bourgeoisie breaks out of them”. She writes: "The show offers images of longing for exotic travel destinations - and more than that: a pleasurable shame of others, the nice feeling of being on a higher level as a Hartz IV recipient than these chubby millionaires."

The Süddeutsche Zeitung suspected the reason for the success of the format to be that the viewer was given the feeling of “meeting real people” who would experience a more exciting, carefree and fuller life than himself. In addition, the newspaper classified the program as a "trash format". Stefan Winterbauer from Meedia criticizes Robert Geiss' proximity to the red-light district , with whose protagonists he was in contact and whose bad manners and prejudices he adopted. In an article by Lars-Marten Nagel and Tim Röhn in the Welt am Sonntag , the aggressive manners of Robert Geiss were particularly criticized.

production

Initially, the show was produced by the Cologne-based production company Joker Productions. Carmen and Robert Geiss received a fee for their appearance. From mid-2014, Robert Geiss wanted a share in the production company, which is why he founded GeissTV GmbH together with Carmen and Endemol Shine and a smaller partner, in which Carmen and Robert Geiss had 40% of the shares. After 10 months, EndemolShine dropped out again. In October 2015, Roberto Geissini Holding AG took control of GeissTV. The sole boss is now Robert Geiss.
