The Guardian of Truth 2: Dina and Black Magic is a Danish fantasy film by Ask Hasselbalch from 2019. The Danish-Czech co-production is the sequel to The Guardian of Truth - Dina's Destiny and, like the first part, a film adaptation of a novel by Lene Kaaberbøl .
action
Dina hides together with her mother and the rightful heir to the throne Nicodemus "Nico" Ravens in the cities of the surrounding area. The evil ruler Drakan and his scheming mother, who have usurped the throne, are still looking for them. When several spectators are arrested at a puppet show against the king on the neutral market square, Nico is among them.
Dina, who knows what danger Nico is in if he should be exposed, sets off with her father, the dragon mage Sezuan, to the capital to save Nico. On the journey there, she also learns her father's black magic and gets closer to him until he is mortally wounded in a fight against the mighty dragon warrior Sarkan.
After a few entanglements and a failed escape attempt, Nico is exposed and banished to the Whisper Cave. But instead of going mad or dying in this torture cave, which confronts you with the wrong decisions of your past, you come out of the cave strengthened. He also succeeds in luring Drakan's mother into the cave, where she goes insane. Meanwhile Dina has also arrived in town and can free her boyfriend. Together they fight Sarkan and can finally defeat him. Dina returns to her mother.
background
In Denmark, the film received a theatrical release on January 24, 2019. In Germany it was dubbed directly for the DVD market. The DVD was released on March 29, 2019. The film is still based on the book series by Lene Kaaberbøl, the content of which is a film adaptation of the third volume Slangens Gave . The events of the second volume Skammertegnet were skipped. The plan is to let the four-part book series culminate in a film trilogy .
Reviews
The film was received in Denmark as mixed compared to the positively received first part. The criticism in Germany sees it similarly. Oliver Armknecht from Film-Rezensions.de compared the second with the first part and came to the following conclusion:
"The second part (...) cannot compete with its predecessor, but the atmosphere of the fantasy adventure is definitely not uninteresting for young people due to the self-discovery elements."
Fabian Mauruschatt wrote on Fischpott.de: "Overall, The Guardian of Truth 2 leaves a rather bland aftertaste that gives hope for a better budgeted - and filmed - part 3."
