background

Melek Tez, a Turkish woman, came to Berlin in 1970 as a young migrant worker . First, Tez tries to counteract hostility and everyday racism in Germany with humor and irony. But after almost 15 years, the actually strong woman resigns and makes preparations for her return to Turkey.

"Kümmeltürkin" is an ironic self-designation by Tez after her first experiences in her new environment.

Film structure

The film assembles documentary, interview and re-enacted scenes into an individual life picture of a Turkish migrant worker in Germany.

Reviews

The Caraway Turkey Goes is a film more of questions than answers. He turns the usual image of Turks in Germany upside down. This is not about an extended family with a dominant father, fearful mother and rebellious children, but about a single woman, a city dweller who once consciously disguises herself as a Turkish woman with a headscarf and a long skirt. - Wilhelm Roth, epd Film, No. 6, June 1985

"With her semi-documentation (...) Jeanine Meerapfel created a portrait film that consciously focuses on the individual case in order to" mobilize sympathy "."
