Die Kugel (dinner service)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The stackable dinner service Die Kugel ( La Boule , Sphere ) was designed in 1971 by Helen von Boch (1938–2007) together with the Italian ceramist Federigo Fabbrini (1928–2007) for the porcelain manufacturer Villeroy & Boch . It was initially produced in two colors from 1972; later, limited editions in special colors and artist designs were created.

description

The dinner service for four people made up of 19 individual parts was the first in the Avantgarde series to be launched on the market. The avant-garde series , which was launched on the market at the beginning of the 1970s, was intended to mark a modern alternative to the traditional faience and earthenware services of the Villeroy & Boch company and also to target younger groups of buyers.

The 19-piece stoneware service Die Kugel consists of four flat plates, four deep plates, four compote bowls, a terrine with a lid, a serving platter and a vegetable and salad bowl and can be put together to form a ball with an integrated handle 28 cm in diameter.

The service was initially produced in the colors green-yellow-orange and brown-white-cognac.

Helen von Boch received the IF Product Design Award in 1972 for the product design of the tableware .

In 1998, a limited anniversary edition of the ball appeared in white glazed earthenware with a black decoration by Rosemarie Benedikt . In addition, an indigo-colored service limited to 250 pieces, originally specially made as a trade fair sample, was produced, which is now exhibited in the Musée National d'Histoire et d'Art in Luxembourg .

As a counterpart to the dinner service for outdoor use, Villeroy & Boch designed the La Bomba picnic tableware made of melamine , with cutlery added to the tableware and stored in a transport net.

reception

The dinner service is now shown as a design object in various museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York , the Dallas Museum of Art , the Musée des Arts décoratifs in Paris and the Grassi Museum for Applied Art in Leipzig and achieves prices of at international art auctions about 700 euros; limited editions correspondingly many times over.

In 2015, the service was presented in green, yellow and orange in the Museum of Applied Arts Cologne during the special exhibition SYSTEM DESIGN. Over 100 years of chaos shown in everyday life . The tableware service was also shown in 2015 in the special exhibition The creative Bochs - Ten generations of artistic talent in several cities in Germany and Luxembourg.
