The return of dreams is a German television film by Renke Korn from 1983 . In the character of the 38-year-old probation officer Alfred Lamm, the film describes the changes in the lives of those who fifteen years earlier - in 1968 - were fighting for a better world.

action

Alfred Lamms is in a crisis of meaning . He treats the juvenile offenders whom he is supposed to support in their rehabilitation with increasing aggressiveness. He torments his wife Bettina with discontent and cynicism. Finally, it is enough for her and she goes out with the two children in a kind of night-and-fog action. Alfred tries to console himself with other women - in vain, because his inner restlessness is far too great to really get involved with them. Alone in the half-empty apartment he tries to find out the reasons for his desperation. He remembers the time when he still believed in the changeability of the world, took part in the demonstrations against the Vietnam War with Bettina in 1968, founded a basement theater with other students at his drama school to make political theater, and later an engagement at a large one He got the stage, but lost it again because he was too ruthless in advocating the co-determination of the ensemble in the design of the schedule, becoming more and more sidelined, until he decided rather resignedly than enthusiastically to train as a social worker.

Alfred's balance sheet: a failure all along the line. His consequence: suicide . This suicide fails and becomes the turning point, the rebirth of the will to seek a way out of his misery. Alfred Lamms travels all over Germany and all the way to Crete , visits former friends from his politically active time and realizes that they too could only save a little of the 1968 ideal into the present. Almost all of them have given up, have adjusted, have withdrawn into private life or have dropped out. Nevertheless, the result of this exploratory trip is positive: Alfred Lamms realizes that retreating into private life is out of the question for him. Without illusions about what is achievable and rather searching, he takes part in the new political movements and is involved in the peace movement .

production

The return of dreams is an autobiographical film by the director Renke Korn , so he processed not only his own memories and experiences but also the experiences of his friends. The film was produced by Manfred Korytowski's Infa Film on behalf of ZDF and had its television premiere on August 15, 1983 as part of the ZDF series “ Fernsehspiel der Gegenwart” .

Jörg Neumann created the production design . The film music consists mainly of songs by Van Morrison from around 1968. The film is preceded by a quote from Ernst Bloch : “The dream cannot forget what is missing. He keeps the door open in all things. "

criticism

"The story [...] mirrored the situation of the entire generation of today's 35- to 40-year-olds who were politically active in 1968 and believed in the possibility of revolutionary changes in both the private and public sectors", wrote the Frankfurter Rundschau 1983. “The film carried out the individual stages of a total collapse with first-hand credibility [...] The story was all the more convincing when Renke Korn did not formally engage in experiments, but proceeded in a conservative, classic manner and then, after a half-hour introduction, up to the crisis predictable regularity present and explanatory flashback dovetailed. '1968 and the consequences' have not been so alive - at least for those involved in one way or another - for a long time. "
