The recruits is a web series that was used by the Bundeswehr from November 2016 to recruit new recruits. For this purpose, recruits from the 10th inspection of the marine technology school in Parow were filmed during their basic training.

At the beginning of the series, the videos ended up almost exclusively at the top of YouTube trends, but gradually the interest of viewers lost. The Bundeswehr describes the series as a "great success" because the number of applicants increased by 20% afterwards.

concept

In the 5–10 minute episodes, the recruits are usually filmed with cameras with fisheye lenses on the individual days of their basic training . In addition, they and their trainers give brief explanations of current events during the training.

Sequels

A similar series was produced in 2017 with the theme of MINUSMA in Mali, Africa . Individual episodes were able to reach the targeted young target audience with several hundred thousand views. The series KSK - Never fight for you alone followed in 2018 , broadcast on YouTube and WhatsApp . In April 2019, the YouTube series Survival started, in which seven officers were accompanied on a lone fighter course. The series The Recruits , in which seven Bundeswehr recruits were accompanied in their basic training, started in September 2019 and was also published on YouTube.

The broadcaster RTL II secured the rights to broadcast the series on television. Since it was not possible to agree on a suitable slot, RTL II decided not to implement the project after all. The Bundeswehr wants to look for an alternative.

criticism

Sascha Stoltenow, blogger and former soldier, comments critically on the web series: "For me this is too much adventure playground and too little serious consideration of the serious aspects of military service."

The Greens politician Doris Wagner criticized in the Augsburger Allgemeine that serious issues such as foreign assignments, death and boredom are completely ignored in the basic business.

Awards

The recruits received the German Digital Award 2017 in the category "Branded Content - Video-long-form (e.g. WebTV)" and received bronze in the category "Social / Dialog - Social Media Campaign". The series also received the Client Award 2017. The Art Directors Club for Germany awarded the series in 2017 with a golden nail in the “Branded Content” category and a silver nail in each of the “Social Media / Network” and “Digital Campaign” categories . In November 2017 Die Rekruten won two GWA Effies : Silver in the “Media” category and gold in the “Content Hero” category. The series won the award for the first time in German Effie history for the awarded Grand Prix. At the German Media Prize 2018 , the agency Crossmedia was awarded for the series in the category “Best Media Idea Digital”.
