The gentle (Original title: Une femme douce ) is a French film from 1969 . Directed by Robert Bresson . The film is based on the story of the same name by Fyodor Dostoyevsky .

The film is set in Paris in the 1960s. A pawnbroker loses his wife by suicide when she jumped off the balcony. He then recapitulates the time spent with her, from the first meeting to the wedding to everyday life. In the course of time he can understand her motives for the act of desperation better and better.
