action

The radiation protection officer Lisa is responsible for carrying out the recovery work on the nuclear waste barrels from the Asse II interim storage facility . Groundwater has been entering for years, which threatens to destroy the emplacement chambers and contaminate the water supply chain of the surrounding population. This task is a great challenge and brings her to the limit of her strength. She wants to quit her job to have more time for her family. But when the test drilling brings to light the extent of the danger to the environment and the population, she has to choose between responsibility for her family and responsibility for her job.

production

The world after is a co-production of the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy with SWR , BR and ARTE .

background

The fictional plot of the film is inspired by the real events in the Asse II . In 1967 the former salt mine near Remlingen was declared a repository . By 2004, over 125,000 barrels of radioactive waste had been stored there. But groundwater penetrated the mine walls and made it unstable. In order to prevent the radioactive inventory of the barrels from getting into the groundwater, it was decided in January 2010 to recover all barrels under the direction of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection , to pack them for final disposal and to transport them to an interim storage facility. The shooting of the film took place parallel to the first test drillings of the actual rescue attempt.
