The impuls action center on Viehhofstrasse is considered to be the forerunner of the exchange . In 1974 the left-alternative association communication center Wuppertal eV "die börse" was founded . The association set up the communication center die börse on Viehhofstrasse in the Elberfeld district of Wuppertal on the site of the former slaughterhouse, which was managed by Tom Tykwer's mother , Anna Tykwer. Both cultural and political events took place in the building that today houses the Villa Media event location . Artists and musicians used the rooms for rehearsals. Well-known jazz musicians were brought in by the program designers Ernst Dieter Fränzel and Rainer Widmann. In addition to appearances by well-known musicians and groups, a focus of the börse was also political work. For example, a counseling center for conscientious objectors and the feminist series of events Frauenschwoof were set up, which were attended by up to 1,200 women per event. However, it gained particular fame through the Wackeltreff , a once-a-week dance event for younger people.

Initially, the communication center met resistance from conservative sections of the city council, but quickly established itself as a cultural center offering concerts, readings (among others by Erich Fried and Allen Ginsberg ) and artistic performances. The political events provoked attacks by right-wing extremist skinheads as well as police measures such as raids . In 1977 there was a fire, the cause of which was never clarified. As a result of the fire damage, the exchange first moved into a private apartment and then premises on Hofkamp . It was not until 1981 that the old building on Viehhofstrasse could be used again.

Despite its initially ambivalent reputation, the börse soon established itself as a nationally known Wuppertal cultural site. In 1996, due to conflicts with the neighborhood, the börse left its domicile on Viehhofstrasse despite ever higher visitor records and moved to an old factory building on Wolkenburg Street . Today, with around 60,000 visitors per year, the city's cultural scene is unimaginable without the exchange and has been funded for a long time with city funds of currently € 183,650 (as of 2014) per year.

In addition to its own discotheque, the cultural program includes poetry slam readings , dance and theater projects and parties from the Bergische Universität Wuppertal . Events called Rudelsingen, the concert series neueshören and festivals such as Von Abseits complete the program.

In 2010 Sascha Gutzeit , JBO , Nazareth , The BossHoss , Barclay James Harvest and Jennifer Rostock gave concerts there. The Wuppertal Opera took advantage of the closure of the Schauspielhaus , the publicly temporarily as a venue . The actor Armin Rohde gained his first acting experience as a teenager in the börse.

Monument protection

The listed building of the stock exchange

Both the former domicile on Viehhofstrasse and the current one on the Wolkenburg are protected as architectural monuments . The Wolkenburg 100 building was erected around 1910 as a factory hall with a shed roof . It was built in solid construction and rebuilt around 1950 after extensive destruction after the Second World War . The façade made of bossed blocks was also taken over again. Each section of the facade was fitted with pointed arches pressed between the pillars . The windows in the right section of the facade were subsequently replaced by a wide door opening in favor of production. The building is one of the few Wuppertal buildings from the Art Deco era that has great historical value.
