The Last Seven is a 1955 science fiction film directed by Roger Corman .

action

In the mid-1970s, a nuclear war nearly wiped out humanity. Five people who survived the inferno leave the contaminated city and head for the mountains.

The group finally arrives in a valley that offers some protection from the radioactive fallout , as the mountains around it contain lead ore and there are favorable winds there. Two other people survived the disaster here: The captain a. D. Maddison and his daughter Louise. Maddison reluctantly takes the ragged troop into his house because supplies are limited. Only later does he realize who he was protecting: the gangster Tony, the radiation- sick Radek, the geologist Rick, who looks normal, the stripper Ruby and the gold prospector Pete and his donkey Diabolo.

While Radek develops into a wild carnivore on his nightly forays, chases radioactive animals and suffers more and more from radiation sickness, Tony chases Louise and Pete falls into the gold rush. But the last seven are joined by an eighth, a mutant that radiation has changed. He chases after both women while bathing, but does not attack them.

When Maddison and Rick meet a dying radiation patient in the mountains, he tells them that there are a few others like him in the mountains, but that they are much stronger than him. When they examine the man, they find that he is a 2nd degree mutant, Radek 1st degree and the great 4th degree mutant. These mutants form a kind of metallic skin as protection against radioactivity and only feed on raw, radioactively contaminated meat. They also shy away from uncontaminated water and food as it kills them. This was also the reason why the mutant did not attack the women at the lake.

When Ruby becomes jealous of Louise, Tony kills her and tries to rise to the leadership of the group. Radek disappears with the donkey diabolo to eat, and is killed by the mutant. Pete, now completely caught up in the gold rush, climbs into the contaminated mountains to mine gold. Maddison then tries to stop Pete, but in vain, because Pete dies immediately. Maddison has exposed herself to a high dose of radioactivity and is heading to the house. During the night the mutant kidnaps Louise. Rick takes up the chase. When he finally found it, the first uncontaminated rain suddenly falls. The mutant is killed and Louise is saved for the time being.

Tony, who still wants to be the leader and ambushes Rick with a revolver, delivers a final showdown in the house, in which he is shot by Maddison. Maddison dies a little later from the high dose of radiation, so that only Rick and Louise remain. Before that, however, he can tell the two of them that he heard voices on his radio, so there must be other survivors. Rick and Louise set out to look for her.

Reviews

"A simultaneously naive and macabre fantasy shapes the atmosphere of the science fiction film, which uses elements of horror and crime to help keep the fear of a nuclear war alive."

“The fear of a nuclear war in the future is strained with primitive means. Half horror movie , half detective. An uncomfortable imposition. "
