Lori Nelson (1952)

Lori Nelson (born August 15, 1933 in Santa Fe , New Mexico as Dixie Kay Nelson;August 23, 2020 in Los Angeles ) was an American actress , who was mainly known for her roles in westerns such as Mutiny on the Serpent River and the monster film The monster's vengeance became known.

Life

Dixie Kay Nelson's great-great-uncle was the American General John J. Pershing . At the age of two she was on stage for the first time in a play at the Santa Fe Lensic Theater. At the age of five she moved with her family to Encino , California , where she won the title of Little Miss America a year later and henceforth worked as a child model.

At the age of seven, Nelson successfully took part in a casting for the film Kings Row and was supposed to take on a role there when she fell ill with rheumatic fever and had to spend the next four years in bed. After her recovery, she returned to beauty pageants and won the Miss Encino title at age 17 . After graduating from Canoga Park High School, Nelson began modeling before signing with Universal Studios in 1950 . From then on she carried the stage name Lori Nelson.

Nelson made her film debut in 1952 in a major supporting role as Marjie Baile in Mutiny on the Serpent River alongside veteran actors such as James Stewart and Rock Hudson . In the following years she played her most famous and greatest roles in westerns, but also had appearances in films of other genres . Among other things, Nelson was seen in the female lead in the monster film The Revenge of the Monster and in one of the lead roles in the science fiction film The Last Seven, set in the atomic end times . Lori Nelson was not engaged by the director Roger Corman , who initially didn't want a star from one of the big studios for the simple production, but by co-producer Alex Gordon, who found her portrayal in Revenge of the Monster convincing.

In the 1960s, Nelson's acting career focused on guest appearances on television series. She had previously acted in several series and was one of three main characters in the first season of How to Marry a Millionaire in 1957 and 1958. It was not until the 1990s that she appeared again occasionally in television and cinema films. She last appeared as an actress in 2005 in the low-budget film The Naked Monster , a homage to the monster films of the 1950s.

Lori Nelson was married to the film composer Johnny Mann (1928-2014) since 1960, from whom she divorced in 1973. Two daughters come from the marriage with a husband. From 1983 until her death, Nelson was married to former police officer Joseph J. Reiner. Nelson died in August 2020 at the age of 87 after suffering from Alzheimer's for several years .
