In the 1950s, he had major appearances in several horror and science fiction films, most of which were produced rather cheaply. The best-known film of these is The Terror of the Amazon from 1954. After that he finally retired from the acting business and spent his twilight years in Hawaii.

Denning had been married to actress Evelyn Ankers since 1942 , and the couple had a daughter named Diana. After Ankers died of cancer in 1985, Denning married Patricia Leffingwell the following year. The marriage lasted until Denning's death. He died of a heart attack in 1998 at the age of 84 while visiting relatives in California. In 1960 he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his television work .
