Barbara Britton

Barbara Britton (born September 26, 1919 as Barbara Maureen Brantingham in Long Beach , California , United States , † January 17, 1980 in New York City ) was an American film actress.

Life

Barbara Maureen Brantingham graduated from Long Beach City College after high school to become a language and drama teacher. She was discovered for the film based on a newspaper photo that showed her representing Long Beach at the Rose Parade in Pasadena . Since Paramount Pictures found her family name too long for the film credits, she chose the pseudonym Barbara Britton .

After her film debut in 1941, she played mostly in westerns and stayed mainly in nice, good-looking and coiffed roles. In the early 1950s she turned to theater and television productions. In the television series Mr. & Mrs. North , she successfully played the role of amateur detective Pamela North for two years. In 1960 she played the female lead in the pilot episode of the later Dick Van Dyke Show , which was then taken over by Mary Tyler Moore in the actual show . For twelve years she worked as an advertising icon for the cosmetics manufacturer Revlon . In the 1960s she was mostly active in Broadway shows and other theater productions. She appeared only occasionally in the 1970s but had a role in the 1979 soap opera Love, Lies, Passion , which she played until her death.

In February 1960, she was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .

From 1945 until her death, she was married to the psychiatrist Eugene Czukor. The couple had lived in Manhattan since 1957 and had four children, two of whom died shortly after birth. Barbara Britton died of pancreatic cancer .
