action

One day, the noble Count Othmar von Rotheneck enters the detective agency of the young Eva Heiden and asks for her help in a tricky case. His bride, also his cousin named Liane, has disappeared! On the eve of the two weddings, he gave her his mother's hereditary jewelry as a kind of preferred wedding present. At that moment the house servant appeared and handed her a letter. Liane is said to have run away pale as a sheet after reading the letter. Count Othmar then wanted to retire to his rooms and only saw Liana briefly on the stairs. Then she finally disappeared and did not appear on the wedding day. At the same moment that Liane was swallowed up by the ground, her brother suddenly appeared and lodged with him, Othmar.

In order to get to the bottom of the strange things, Eva now has to go to the Count's castle of the Rothenecks as well. In order not to attract attention, she lets herself be introduced as Othmar's cousin. Her appearance does not suit the unasked brother Lianes at all, and he is now trying to get rid of Eva as quickly as possible. Since he does not manage to do this in the usual way, one day he unceremoniously locks her in the castle's own dungeon. However, Eva manages to free herself. During this action she suddenly comes across a closet, the door of which does not open. It turns out that the missing vine is locked there dead as a mouse.

When Eva opens the cupboard, the pushy brother suddenly stands in front of her. Eva tells him on the head that she thinks he murdered his sister. She tries to elicit a confession from him, but he is just as appalled as the young detective. At least he admits that the ominous letter came from him, which the butler presented to the future mistress of the house shortly before Liane's disappearance. This letter to Liane contained his announcement that he would from now on settle in the count's castle and henceforth live at the expense of his future brother-in-law. It turns out that Liane had lost this very embarrassing letter while “escaping” from her husband's room. In a panic, she began looking everywhere. When Liane saw Othmar on the stairs, she tried to hide from him and chose the closet with the obviously extremely jammed door, which she could no longer open. In the end, she starved to death there.
