Diego Antonio Gavilán Zárate (born March 1, 1980 in Asunción ) is a Paraguayan soccer coach and former soccer player .
He participated with the Paraguayan national team in the soccer world championships in 2002 and 2006 and was the first Paraguayan soccer player in the English Premier League .
career
Gavilán comes from a large Paraguayan football family and was one of the great young talents in his country. After playing for Cerro Porteño in the Paraguayan first division for only one season , the Premier League club Newcastle United signed him in 1999 at the age of only 19 for a transfer fee of £ 1-2 million. He was the first Paraguayan footballer to play in England, but despite appearing six times in the first year, he was unable to hold onto the first team in the years that followed
Gavilán was loaned out several times in the following years, in the Mexican league to the UAG Tecos , the Brazilian Série A to SC Internacional from Porto Alegre and to Udinese Calcio in Italy, where he was without a job. In 2004 he left Newcastle United for good and spent two more successful years as a regular at the Brazilian SC Internacional. From the beginning of 2006 Gavilán played in the Argentine Primera División with the Newell's Old Boys . In early 2007 he moved to Brazil, where he was active in various first division clubs until the end of 2008. At the beginning of 2009, he was hired by the Argentinian CA Independiente . In the following years he played in Paraguay and Peru, but was rarely used. In 2012 he ended his active career.
Gavilán was already in the Paraguayan senior team at the age of 19 . At the soccer World Cup in Asia in 2002 he was part of the team and made three World Cup appearances. Even four years later in Germany he was in Paraguay's World Cup squad . There he was only second choice and was not used. In 1999 he also took part in the Copa America . In his total of 43 international matches until 2007, he remained without an international goal.
After the end of his playing career, Gavilán worked as a football coach in Paraguay.
