In contrast to the ranks of the fire brigade in Germany and Austria, the ranks of the Swiss fire brigades are based on the ranks of the Swiss army (before 2003). They are:

Since the Swiss fire brigades are organized on a cantonal level, there are no higher degrees .

The degree badges are very similar to the epaulets of the Swiss Army ( called patten ). Their basic color is black. Only with the NCO badges are there differences in the emblem in the middle. Most fire departments use a Swiss cross , which is shown in front of two crossed axes and is surrounded by a laurel wreath. In some municipalities, the fire brigade emblem is replaced by the municipal coat of arms or, for reasons of space, by another angle.
