The first league game completed Dieter Attern in the round 1947/48 away on September 14, 1947 at VfR Cologne . Witten and Cologne parted 1: 1 after goals from Heinrich Becker and Alfred Bender . Witten finished last at the end of the season and was relegated to the national league . In the following 1948/49 season , the Witten champions were their regional league relay and met in the final round of the Westphalia championship on Arminia Bielefeld and SpVgg Herten . After the round ended in a stalemate, a re-round was scheduled. After a 1-0 defeat against Bielefeld in Münster , Arminia rose. The Witten continued to play in the 2nd Oberliga West , where the club took eleventh place in the 1949/50 season. For financial reasons, however, VfL's license was withdrawn and the team had to be relegated to the state league. For the league season 1951/52 Attern moved to STV Horst-Emscher and in the summer of 1953 to VfL Bochum . Attern's last league game was on the last matchday of the round 1954/55 , May 1, 1955, in Bochum's 1-0 away defeat at Fortuna Düsseldorf . After a foul by Erich Juskowiak , Attern was injured so badly that he had to end his active career.
