Life

Böning attended primary school in Gielsdorf-Ödekoven until 1949 and then the Aloisiuskolleg in Bad Godesberg until 1958 . From 1958 to 1964 he studied medicine in Bonn , Innsbruck  and Freiburg im Breisgau . In 1964 and 1965 Böning worked as a medical assistant in Bonn and Berlin . In November 1965 he took up an assistant position at the Institute for Normal and Pathological Physiology and in Anesthesia at the Surgical Clinic of the University of Cologne , and from July 1, 1968 he worked as a scientific assistant at the Physiological Institute of the German Sport University Cologne (DSHS). In 1973 he completed his habilitation .

At the beginning of May 1976 Böning took up the post of head of department for sport and work physiology at the Hannover Medical School and remained in office until 1993. In the meantime, from September 1983 to September 1984, he was visiting professor of physiology at the Universidad del Valle in Cali ( Colombia ).

In June 1993 Böning took up a professorship for sports medicine at the Free University of Berlin and took over the management of the Institute for Sports Medicine (later Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin). He campaigned - ultimately in vain - to maintain the independence of sports medicine at the Free University of Berlin and against a merger with the Humboldt University of Berlin  . In 2000 he was awarded the title of Honorary Professor by the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Bogotá . At the end of March 2004 he retired, but remained chairman of the Association for the Promotion of Sports Medicine. Böning was editor of the German magazine for sports medicine.

Böning's main research areas included the function and adaptation of gas metabolism to altitude conditions as well as exercise physiology. He also delved into the phenomenon of sore muscles .
