Dieter Bihlmaier

Dieter Bihlmaier (* 1941 ; † 1981 ) was a German jazz flutist .

Bihlmaier first played the trombone in Dixieland bands before switching to the flute and modern jazz and new music . Therefore he studied classical flute in Stuttgart, Zurich and Berlin, most recently with Aurèle Nicolet . In addition to the soprano transverse flute, he also played the piccolo , alto flute , bass flute and bamboo flutes . He was the first flutist at the Aachen Opera and in the Philharmonic Orchestra of the City of Heidelberg . In 1970 Bihlmaier was given a teaching position at the State University of Music Heidelberg-Mannheim . A little later he also taught flute at the Erlangen Music Institute, where he headed the Jazz Forum he founded as a department for contemporary jazz.

After gaining experience with Peter Kowald and Karl Berger , he founded his Dieter Bihlmaier Selection in 1972 , which initially included Harry Rettenbacher , Jan Jankeje and Gerhart Ziegler and with whom he played numerous concerts over the next few years. From 1978 Bihlmaier and Ziegler played in a quartet with Michel Pilz (or Heinz Sauer ) and Buschi Niebergall . In 1979 he was also involved in recordings by the jazz rock group Orexis ( Reflection ). In 1980 and 1981 he performed in a duo with bassist Wolfgang Lauer.
