Dieter Boris

Dieter Boris (born May 27, 1943 in Bielitz ) is a German sociologist and Latin American scientist. He studied sociology with Heinz Maus and political science with Wolfgang Abendroth in Marburg. At Maus he did his doctorate with a thesis on the political sociology of Karl Mannheim . During his studies he got involved in the SDS , in whose political committee he was elected as a “Third World Specialist” (1967/68).

Dieter Boris had been Professor of Sociology at the Philipps University of Marburg since 1972 . From 1983 to 1989 he was a member of the scientific advisory board of the Institute for Marxist Studies and Research (IMSF). He is part of the editorial board of the Z. Zeitschrift Marxistische Erneuerung . His research focus is on the political sociology of Latin America.

Dieter Boris retired in 2008. On July 4th, 2008 he gave his final lecture on "Globalization and the Periphery" at the Philipps University of Marburg. An application to extend his term of service had previously been rejected by the university management.

The book “Beyond Subcomandante Marcos and Hugo Chávez. Social movements between autonomy and the state ”, which was published in 2008 by Anne Tittor and Stefan Schmalz in VSA Verlag, was published as a commemorative publication for Dieter Boris.
