Dieter Borkowski

Dieter Borkowski (born November 1, 1928 in Berlin ; † February 22, 2000 in Raddestorf ) was a German writer and journalist.

Life

Borkowski was the son of a commercial clerk. After attending the municipal business school in Berlin-Charlottenburg, he was drafted as an anti-aircraft helper in 1944 and was taken prisoner by the Soviets during the fighting for Berlin . After passing the special maturity examination, he studied history and newspaper science at the Humboldt University in Berlin from 1947 . He became a volunteer at the Berlin radio and at the German Institute for Contemporary History . From 1947 he worked for Erich Honecker . In the same year he became a member of the SED . From 1951 to 1952 he was press officer at the central management of the Deutsche Volksbühne, from 1952 to 1955 culture editor of the magazine Unser Rundfunk . After the uprising of June 17, 1953 , he was expelled from the SED because of his opposition to the government and was banned from working as an editor. From 1960 to 1962, because of his contacts with the Schirdewan - Wollweber Group, he was in solitary confinement at the Central Remand Prison of the State Security, Berlin-Hohenschönhausen .

Under the pseudonym Arno Hahnert , Borkowski wrote illegally for the weekly newspaper Die Zeit from 1966 to 1971 and was therefore arrested again as an “agent of the capitalist Brandt-Scheel clique”. In 1972 he was exchanged for GDR spies imprisoned in the Federal Republic of Germany and then studied history in Hanover . 1972 to 1973 he was press officer at the Evangelical Academy Loccum .

In 1987 Borkowski published the first Honecker biography in the Federal Republic. After reunification , he helped to come to terms with the SED dictatorship and sifted through party and Stasi documents , especially on officials.
