Dieter W. Heermann (born March 18, 1955 in Cologne ) is a German physicist .

Life

Heermann studied computer science , mathematics and physics at the University of Cologne from 1976 to 1981 . In 1983 he was at the Boston University (USA) with the work Metastability in Ising Models for Dr. rer. nat. PhD in theoretical physics . From 1983 to 1987 he worked as a postdoc and as an external member at the Institute for Solid State Physics at Forschungszentrum Jülich . During this time he completed his habilitation with a thesis on metastability . From 1984 to 1987 he was also an assistant and university lecturer at the University of Mainz . In 1988 he followed a call to the University of Wuppertal . In 1989 he switched to the professorship for complex systems at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Heidelberg , where he still heads the Statistical Physics and Theoretical Biophysics research group to this day. Since October 1, 2013 he has been Vice Rector for International Affairs at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg.

Research focus

After he dealt primarily with fundamental problems of statistical physics at the beginning of his scientific career , he later shifted his scientific focus to polymer research and materials science . Today he works particularly on biophysical problems. His area of activity currently includes a. the physics of the chromosome , genetic research and proteomics , modeling of tumor growth as well as biostatistics and image analysis. His major books, such as Monte Carlo Simulation in Statistical Mechanics: An Introduction and Introduction to Computational Science , have been translated into various languages including Chinese, Japanese, and Russian. Heermann has been a Scientific Expert for the European Union since 2006 . In 2008 he was appointed Assistant Professor at the Jackson Laboratory in Maine (USA). Since 2011 he has been a visiting professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences . He is a member of the German and American Physical Society as well as the Biophysical Society. Heermann has been a member of the Senate of Heidelberg University since 2010. Since 2013 he has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Heidelberg University Association Inc.
