Dietrich Tiedemann
Dietrich Tiedemann , also Dieterich Tiedemann , (born April 3, 1748 in Bremervörde , † May 24, 1803 in Marburg ) was an eclectic philosopher and historian of philosophy.
Life
The son of the legally qualified mayor Franz Tiedemann attended the schools in Bremervörde, Verden and the Lutheran grammar school ( Athenaeum Bremen ) in Bremen . In 1767 he began his studies in Göttingen, heard mathematics from Abraham Gotthelf Kästner , philosophy from Andreas Weber and otherwise devoted himself to theology. Supported by his childhood friend Christoph Meiners , he later turned to philosophical literature. Inspired by travelogues, he came up with the plan to write a history of humanity.
In 1769 he took over a position as court master of the children of Baron Budberg in Livonia . In 1774 he returned to Göttingen and perfected his knowledge of the classical languages in Christian Gottlob Heyne's philological seminar. On his recommendation he was appointed professor of Latin and Greek at the Collegium Carolinum in Kassel in 1776 .
He continued to study philosophy and its history. Johannes Nikolaus Tetens corrected his materialistic views. His beliefs were based on Leibniz's metaphysics and Locke's epistemology. Kant's Critique of Pure Reason interested him most vividly, but without winning him over.
In 1778 he married Sophie Rothausen in Kassel, with whom he had four children, including the eldest, Friedrich Tiedemann (* 1781 in Kassel).
When the majority of the professors of the Collegium Carolinum were transferred to the University of Marburg in 1786 , he too moved there, was given the full professorship for philosophy in Marburg and gave lectures on logic, metaphysics, natural law, morals and the philosophy of history. Soon afterwards he was appointed councilor . He initiated the study of behavioral development on the basis of concrete observation, kept a diary on the development of his son, and in 1787 published observations on the development of the mental faculty in children .
