Dietmar Luppa

Dietmar Luppa (born September 17, 1940 in Gliwice ) is a German biochemist and university professor who researched and taught in particular on the subject of nutrition in sport.

Life

Luppa passed his Abitur in 1958 in Zwickau and then studied chemistry at the University of Leipzig . After graduating in 1965, he became a research assistant in the field of biochemistry at the same university, and in 1970 he completed his doctoral thesis with the grade summa cum laude . Luppa then worked as a research assistant in the technical chemistry department and then as a research assistant or senior assistant in the medicine department at Leipzig University. At the same time as these tasks, Luppa completed a further course of study as a university educator and specialist chemist in medicine. In 1982 he submitted his habilitation in biochemistry.

Luppa gained international experience, from August 1984 to November 1985 headed the biochemistry department at Gondar College in Ethiopia . In 1985 he was appointed professor at the University of Leipzig and in September 1986 at the German University for Physical Culture (DHfK) in Leipzig . In 1987 he took up a full professorship at the DHfK. After the DHfK was dissolved in 1990, Luppa was one of the people who helped set up the sports science faculty at the University of Leipzig, which began operations in 1993. He took on a position at the new faculty as a university professor for sports biochemistry and sports physiology, was acting head of the institute for sports medicine and from 1995 headed the sports biochemistry, performance physiology and sports anatomy department. At the age of 65, Luppa left office at the University of Leipzig in 2005, but continued to work. He has been a lecturer at the BSA Academy in Saarbrücken since 1992, and in 2005 he became the head of the graduate nutritionist course at the BA private vocational academy, which was transferred to the German University for Prevention and Health Management (DHfPG) in 2008 . In the same year Luppa took up the positions as professor and rector at the DHfPG. In October 2016, he left the DHfPG as rector, and two months later he was made an honorary senator at the university.

During his scientific career, Luppa dealt in the field of research in particular with various aspects of the complex nutrition in sports, including the active ingredient L-carnitine .

In November 2005 Luppa was awarded the “Theodor Litt Prize” by the “Association of Patrons and Friends of the University of Leipzig” as an “award for special commitment in teaching”.
