biography

After several victories in FIS races , Thöni was accepted into the squad of the Austrian Ski Association in 1986 . In the European Cup he was initially successful in the Super-G and over the years he was able to improve to third place in the discipline ranking of the 1989/90 season . In the following winter Thöni was the best slalom runner and in the overall ranking he took fourth place. In the 1991/92 season , the Super-G was again his strongest discipline. The Tyrolean celebrated his first and only European Cup victory in Kvitfjell and was again third in the discipline classification.

Due to his performance in the European Cup, Thöni also made his first World Cup appearances in the early 1990s and he was already in the top 20 at least once. Due to the change in the regulations, the top 30 runners from the 1991/92 season instead of just like before the best 15, who received World Cup points, Thöni got his first points on November 30, 1991 with rank 23 in the slalom of Breckenridge . At the beginning of the 1992/93 season he came eighth in the slalom of Val-d'Isère for the first time in the top ten. In the further course of the season, however, he was never better than 15th, before he surprisingly took third place in the Super-G of Kvitfjell on March 21, 1993 and thus achieved his best World Cup placement ever.

The following winter , Thöni was among the fastest 15 times in the slalom. His best result was ninth place in Kranjska Gora . In the Super-G he only came in 18th in Val-d'Isère. At the beginning of February Thöni was seriously injured and he had to end the season early. In the next few seasons, the Tyrolean only started in slalom, but he had to fight more and more with failures and his injured knee was increasingly causing him problems. In the winter of 1994/95 his best result was tenth place on the Ganslernhang in Kitzbühel . In the following year he only crossed the finish line twice - 15th in Madonna di Campiglio and 13th in Flachau . After the 1995/96 season, Thöni decided to have an operation on his injured knee and he withdrew from top-class sport.

Today Thöni works as a trainer and he owns a holiday pension in his home town .
