Dietrich Birnbaum
Dietrich E. Birnbaum (born February 16, 1942 in Chemnitz ; † January 2, 2017 in Shenzhen ) was a German heart surgeon .
Career
Dietrich Birnbaum studied human medicine at the Free University of Berlin from 1962 . In 1965 he studied at the Hôpial Cochin in Paris and 1966–1967 at the Case Western Reserve, University of Cleveland / Ohio. In 1968 he received his doctorate in medicine at the Medical Faculty of the Free University of Berlin. In 1969 he obtained his medical license. In 1970 he passed the ECFMG certificate (Educational Commission For Foreign Medical Graduates). From 1970 to 1971 he was a Research Fellow at the Medical Center, University of Colorado, Denver, USA. 1972–1980 he worked as a scientific medical assistant at the Free University of Berlin. In 1978 he became a specialist in surgery and in 1980 a specialist in thoracic, cardiac and vascular surgery, both at the Medical Association of the Free University of Berlin. In 1980 he completed his habilitation and venia legendi for surgery at the Medical Faculty of the Free University of Berlin. 1985 rehabilitation at the Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg.
He became an assistant professor in 1978 and Univ. Professor at the Surgical University Clinic and Polyclinic at the Charlottenburg Clinic of the Free University of Berlin. From 1984 to 1990 he worked as a senior doctor in the department for cardiovascular surgery at the Benedikt-Kreutz - REHA -Zentrum in Bad Krozingen . In 1991 he was appointed to the chair for cardiac, thoracic and cardiac vascular surgery at the University of Regensburg Clinic , which he held until his retirement in March 2007. 1998: Licensed Fellow of the European Board of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery. After his retirement in 2007 he was responsible for heart transplantation and implantation of artificial hearts at the Kerckhoff Clinic in Bad Nauheim. From October 2007 to December 2008 he also worked in the role of Medical Director and Medical Director of the Kerckhoff Clinic. In 2013 he received the diploma for tropical medicine from the Bernhard Nocht Institute / Hamburg.
Medical and scientific work
Birnbaum was active in the framework of visiting professorships:
- 1981 at Stanford Medical Center Palo Alto / CA,
- 1982 at the University of Alabama, Birmingham / AL,
- 1983 at the Childrens Hospital of the Harvard Medical Center in Boston / MA in USA and
- 1984 at the Hospital for Sick Children, London in GB
- From 2009–2011, Birnbaum was instrumental in founding and developing the medical university in Asella on behalf of the DAAD as part of a humanitarian, development policy activity in Asella / Ethiopia. There he held the position of Founder-Dean of the School of Health Sciences at Adama Science and Technology at the University of Ethiopia.
In the course of his clinical activities, Birnbaum focused on the following research topics:
- Heart valve reconstructions , heart transplants and arterial revascularization .
- gentle heart-lung machines (MECC - Minimal Extracorporeal Circulation) for heart operations as well as the
- Development of a simple and portable lung machine (PECLA-Pumpless extracorporeal lung assist) for the stabilization of patients with acute lung failure.
His research focused primarily on the
- Function of the endothelium as the crucial interface between blood and valve or vascular prostheses. He was significantly involved with the
- Methods of tissue engineering to develop an improved vascular substitute for coronary artery bypass
Another focus of his scientific work was the
- Transplant immunology with pharmacokinetically based m-TOR inhibition in heart transplants and the
- human autologous, qualitatively controlled endothelial cell culture for coating vascular prostheses <5 mm for coronary replacement.
