Dietrich I. (Metz)
Dietrich I († July 18, 984 ) was Bishop of Metz from 964 to 984. He is venerated as a blessed in the Roman Catholic Church .

Dietrich was born the son of Count Everhard Saxo von Hamaland and his wife Amalrada and was raised in Halberstadt .
After the death of Bishop Adalbert , a son of Count Palatine Wigerich , Dietrich, a cousin of Otto I , became administrator of the diocese of Metz and later, at the instigation of Archbishop Brun of Cologne , a brother of Otto I, succeeded Adalbert. He was ordained Bishop of Metz on March 5, 965. According to contemporary writers, Dietrich was a lamp that poured its light over all branches of human knowledge ( studiorum omnium lux ). He was Brun's friend and advisor and accompanied him on his trip to Compiègne . Brun died on the way in Reims in the arms of his friend. Since Bruno's death, Dietrich was one of Otto I's most influential advisors, in close contact with the court and was therefore often absent from Metz for a long time, so that he was unable to devote any particular care to his diocese.
In 968 he founded the St. Vincent Abbey and proved to be a patron of various churches and monasteries. In 962 he accompanied Otto to Italy , attended his coronation ceremony and later received the honorable assignment of receiving the Greek imperial niece Theophanu , whom the emperor had solicited for his son from Rome, on the coast of Italy . After Otto I's death, Dietrich received the same influential position at the court of Otto II. After the war with King Lothar of France was over , Otto II came to Metz and was solemnly crowned King of Lorraine . In 981 Dietrich accompanied the emperor to Italy and after the unfortunate battle in Calabria rendered him considerable service.
Dietrich was also active as a writer. From his travels to Italy he had brought with him relics of various saints , whose biographies he wrote, but these have not survived.
