Dietrich was a son of Johann von Limburg-Styrum and his first wife Uda, daughter of Otto III. from Ravensberg and Hedwig zur Lippe.

Dietrich married Johanna († around 1384), daughter of Heinrich von Reifferscheid († July 25, 1355) and Johanna von Kessenich († February 21, 1361) in 1353. They had the following offspring:
