Philipp Ferdinand of Limburg-Styrum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Philipp Ferdinand von Limburg-Styrum (born August 21, 1734 in Wilhermsdorf ; † September 18, 1794 ) was a German nobleman, Count von Limburg by descent , Lord of Styrum by heir . He was also heir to Wilhermsdorf in Franconia and the rule of Oberstein an der Nahe. He is known for his relationship with Princess Tarakanova .

ancestry

Philipp Ferdinand was a son of Count Christian Otto von Limburg-Styrum (* March 25, 1694 at Styrum Castle ; † February 24, 1749 there) and his wife Princess Karoline Sofie zu Hohenlohe-Waldenburg-Schillingsfürst (* April 20, 1705; † August 31, 1758).

politics

Philipp Ferdinand von Limburg-Styrum succeeded in asserting hereditary claims on the Oberstein rule. After a lengthy process in 1773, two thirds of the rule were awarded to him, while the rest fell to Kurtrier .

Due to the high debts of Phlipp Ferdinand, the Reichshofrat has set up a debt liquidation commission . With that the administration of the rule went completely to Kurtrier.

He had also inherited Wilhermsdorf in Franconia. Because of his debts he was forced to sell this property in 1769.

In addition, like his ancestors since the 17th century, he also claimed the title of heir to Holstein . In contrast to these, Philipp Ferdinand has formally carried the coat of arms and the title of Duke of Schleswig-Holstein without this having been recognized.

Philipp Ferdinand sued the Reichshofrat against the Kingdom of Denmark for inheritance claims in Schleswig-Holstein, but also against the imperial measures against the dominions of Oberstein, Styrum and Wilhermsdorf.

The trial of the Oberstein rule ended successfully for Limburg-Styrum in 1792. The rest of the rule also fell to him. However, he immediately pledged two thirds of it to the Electorate of Trier. After his death, the rule of Oberstein fell to his brother Erich Maria . This she lost a short time later due to the advance of the French troops.

Trivia

In 1768, because of his high debts, he founded two orders, the Knightly Order of the Old Nobility or the Four Roman Emperors and, for non-nobility, the Order of St. Philip of the Lion of Holstein. Admission was associated with high admission prices. Even as the ruling count, he was not entitled to found orders; his claim to the title of duke of Schleswig-Holstein was not recognized. Philipp Ferdinand tried to set up a regiment in Paris. He paid his officers with his medals. When his lover, the alleged Princess Elisabeth Tarakanowa , left him and went to Italy, she made her living there with a supply of these Limburg medals she had brought with her. After Philipp Ferdinand's death, his brother and heir no longer led the order.
