Moritz von Limburg-Styrum (born July 1, 1634 in Deventer , Overijssel , † August 28, 1664 in Vienna ) was a German nobleman, Count of Limburg by descent and lord of Styrum by heir .

ancestry

Count Moritz was the third-born son of Count Hermann Otto I of Limburg-Styrum (* September 3, 1592 - October 17, 1644) and his wife Anna Magdalene, Freiin Spies von Büllesheim zu Frechen (* around 1600 - May 16 1659).

Life

After his father's death in 1644, the estate was divided between Count Moritz and his two brothers Count Otto and Count Adolf Ernst, whereby he received the rule of Styrum .

In 1658 he fought as captain for France against the Spaniards, but was hardly used because Turenne had already defeated the Spaniards in Dunkirk . Moritz ended up in Troyes prison for plundering a noble house . However, through the intercession of his superior, he was released, but was released from the regiment. A little later, Count Moritz succeeded in getting a cavalry position in Duke Ulrich von Württemberg's regiment .

Moritz had been at home at Styrum Castle since the beginning of 1659 . After his mother died in May, Moritz undertook major alterations to the castle with the help of her estate.

On October 8, 1659, after a hare hunt together and later eating and drinking in the Hamborn monastery , Count Moritz shot and killed the young count Carl Alexander von Daun-Falkenstein while riding home in an argument . Whether this was an accident or a murder was never established. Count Moritz, who feared the revenge of his father, Count Wilhelm Wirich von Daun-Falkenstein , fled to his sister-in-law in Gemen . From here he planned his defense before the Reich Chamber of Commerce in Düsseldorf . The case finally landed before the Reichshofrat in Aachen , but was never brought to an end.

Count Moritz took part in the Turkish War in Austria from 1663 . On August 28, 1664, he was killed in a duel in Vienna.
