life and work

Italo Valenti began to study and work with a goldsmith in Vicenza in 1927 and to attend the painting classes at the art school in the evenings. During this time he made the acquaintance of the painters Maurizio Girotto and Libero Augenti and the writers Neri Pozza and Antonio Barolini .

After teaching and attending other art schools in Vicenza and the Academy in Venice , Valenti studied from 1934 to 1937 at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan with Aldo Carpi , where he also worked as an assistant. He had his first solo exhibition in Valdagno in 1932. In his early art he dealt with dramatic realism . A stay in Paris and Belgium in 1935 enabled him to deal with impressionism and the art of Paul Cezanne . Valenti was a member of the artist group " Corrente " from its inception .

In the 1940s, Valenti dealt with inanimate objects and still lifes in his painting . In the 1950s Valenti moved to Switzerland , where he met the poet Anne de Montet , whom he married, and had intensive contact with Hans Arp , Ben Nicholson and Julius Bissier .

During these years, after a period of liberation from representational art, Valenti turned to Art Informel and dedicated himself to collage . In his collages he used colored cards, in different thicknesses and different shapes, avoiding lines and geometric shapes. His art clearly turned to abstraction and concreteness, completely free from illusionism.

In 1958 he was a participant in the Venice Biennale . In 1964 Italo Valenti was represented with some collages at the documenta III in Kassel in the painting department .

He has had solo and group exhibitions in Italy, Switzerland and internationally. His works are represented in numerous collections of public galleries and museums around the world.
