Dietrich Loher
Dietrich Loher (also Dierick Loer , Latinized Theodoricus Loher a Stratis , * around 1495 in Stratum , North Brabant ; † August 26, 1554 in Würzburg ) was a theologian, Carthusian monk , church politician and editor of theological writings.
Life
Dietrich Loher entered the Carthusian Order in Cologne in 1520 , where he became sacristan in 1525 and vicar in 1530 . He began an extensive writing activity. In 1538 he published the writings of his teacher, the prior of the Cologne Charterhouse Peter Blommeveen (1466–1536), and had an extensive edition of the works of Dionysius Carthusianus (1402 / 03–1471) printed.
Loher's work was not limited to editorial and scientific work. In 1539 he became prior of the Hildesheim Charterhouse . After attacks by the Hildesheim city council, which had become Protestant, and after the monastery was plundered several times in 1542 and 1543, Loher and his fellow brothers initially withdrew to Cologne.
In 1543 Loher became prior of the Upper Swabian Charterhouse of Buxheim near Memmingen and, as a provincial superior, also took over the management of the Lower Swabian Order . After the Protestant Memmingen city council had confiscated the Charterhouse in 1546, Loher achieved the return of the Charterhouse through imperial intervention at the Augsburg Reichstag in 1547 . In 1548 the House of Habsburg and the Holy Roman Empire took over the protection of the Buxheim Monastery, which then became an "Imperial Charterhouse".
In 1548, the general chapter of his order commissioned Loher to negotiate the return of the monasteries that had been lost by the Reformation. He succeeded in regaining the Carthusian monarchy of Erfurt and, initially only formally, Hildesheim for the order. The Hildesheim Charterhouse was meanwhile used as part of the city fortifications. It was not until 1613 that the Carthusians were able to repopulate the monastery.
In 1554 Dietrich Loher was appointed a visitor to the Upper German, Low German and Saxon provinces and an authorized representative of the Rhenish Province. He died in the same year during a visitation in Würzburg.
Dietrich's younger brother Bruno Loher (* approx. 1500; † July 30, 1557) also lived as a Carthusian in Cologne, where he was vicar and novice master. Bruno also appeared as editor, u. a. of works by Johannes Justus von Landsberg .
