Dilek Öcalan (born October 3, 1987 in Ömerli , Turkey ) is a former member of the Kurdish Halkların Demokratik Partisi . She is Abdullah Öcalan's niece and lives (as of 2019) in European exile.

Private

Dilek Öcalan comes from simple rural and traditional backgrounds. She was born as the youngest of a total of seven children to Abdullah Öcalan's sister in Ömerli (Kurdish Amara) in the Halfeti district of the Şanlıurfa province. Her parents are Fatma and Hüseyin Zain Öcalan. Her father, who was her mother's cousin, died when Dilek was six months old. Her eldest brother Ali took on the role of head of the family. Her four older brothers only attended elementary school. Dilek attended the elementary school in Ömerli, the middle school in the village of Saylakkaya (Kurdish Cibin) and the high school in the district town of Halfeti. She lived at home until she graduated from school. At the behest of her uncle Abdullah, whom she calls "the leadership" ( Önderlik ), she should study. Dilek Öcalan spent a year in Diyarbakır preparing for the university entrance exam in a Dershane . She completed a degree in tourism and travel management at Mersin Üniversitesi and returned to Diyarbakır, where she worked in a city administration women's project. Meanwhile, she continued her studies of sociology as a distance learning course at Anadolu Üniversitesi .

When the Barış ve Demokrasi Partisi split into Halkların Demokratik Partisi and Demokratik Bölgeler Partisi in 2014 , it joined the Democratic Bölgeler Partisi and was elected to the party executive committee. In the parliamentary elections in Turkey in June 2015 , Öcalan was elected as a member of the Turkish Grand National Assembly. Mehmet Öcalan, her uncle and brother of Abdullah Öcalan, objected to the candidacy. Dilek Öcalan is too young and has not yet achieved anything. His brother will not approve of it, he said publicly. In the new elections in the same year , Dilek Öcalan was confirmed as a member of parliament. At both constituent sessions of parliament, at the age of 27 and 28, she was the youngest member of the parliamentary presidium.

Imprisonment and exile

In February 2016, she attended a funeral ceremony for a fallen fighter from the Kurdistan Workers' Party . According to the PKK media, she gave a speech with the following statements: A Kurd never bows to tyrants and will not do so in the future either. The Kurdish people will win. Today you stood up for a martyr and gave the AKP a resounding slap . Her immunity as a member of parliament was lifted, Dilek Öcalan was tried and sentenced to 2.5 years in prison. The sentence has not been suspended. Before the parliamentary elections in Turkey in 2018 , Dilek Öcalan evaded state control, went to Europe and took part in an indefinite hunger strike by the PKK in Strasbourg in late 2018 and early 2019 to end Abdullah Öcalan's solitary confinement. The hunger strike would be called off at the behest of Abdullah Öcalan.
