The Democracy Bölgeler Partisi ( DBP ; German Democratic Party of the Regions , kurmandschi : Partiya Herêman a Demokratîk ) is a political party in Turkey . Its declared aim is to represent the interests of the Kurdish minority and to decentralize Turkey. It was created in July 2014 when the pro-Kurdish Barış ve Demokrasi Partisi (BDP) was renamed at their third party congress. Unlike the BDP before, the DBP wants to concentrate on a commitment at the local level and no longer participate in national parliamentary elections. Instead, the Halkların Demokratik Partisi (HDP; Democratic Party of the Peoples) is supposed to take over, which functions as a kind of “sister party”.
While the majority of the BDP MPs switched to the HDP at the end of April 2014, only Emine Ayna remained as the only MP of the DBP in the National Assembly until the general election in June 2015 .
Under its old name BDP, the DBP won a total of 97 mayor offices in the local elections in March 2014 , including Diyarbakır and Van, two large city communes (tr: Büyükşehir Belediyesi ).
Removal of several mayors in September 2016
Mayors or politicians of the DBP have always been suspended or arrested because of their alleged support of the banned PKK . After an attempted coup in Turkey on July 15, 2016, a state of emergency (tr: olağanüstü hal ) was declared nationwide on July 21 . Since then, the government has been able to pass new laws by means of ordinances with legal force (tr: kanun hükmünde kararnameler ). On September 11th, 28 mayors were dismissed and replaced by state officials. 24 of these mayors are members of the DBP and have been charged with supporting the PKK. The deposed mayors included those of Batman , Hakkâri , Sur , Silvan , Nusaybin , Cizre and Silopi - cities that were severely destroyed in the wake of a new escalation between the state and the PKK in 2015 and the imposition of curfews. In November the mayors of the cities of Mardin , Tunceli and Van were suspended and arrested. A total of 34 mayors of the DBP were replaced by employees of the Interior Ministry (as of mid-November).
