Dimitri Monstein

Dimitri Monstein (born September 2, 1991 in Zurich ) is a Swiss jazz musician ( drums , composition , orchestral direction).

Monstein, who grew up in his hometown, received his first drum lessons from Eckhard Fiebig of the Philharmonia Zurich at the age of five . In 2012 he began his studies at the University of Art, Design and Popular Music in Freiburg , before moving to the Zurich University of the Arts after a year , where he received his bachelor's degree in 2016 . He completed his master's degree at the same university in 2018 with distinction.

Since 2016, in addition to his quartet, he has also led his Dimitri Monstein Ensemble , which has been expanded by a string quartet , with whom he toured in Switzerland and Germany, but also performed in Romania. In 2017 the Monstein Ensemble released the video clip for the single Landscape of the same name ; the album of the same name was released by Unit Records in 2019 and was presented by NDR as "Album of the Week".

Besides its own projects Monstein plays among other drums in the Zirkushhow Salto Natale of Rolf Knie . As a sideman he played with the Zurich Jazz Orchestra , Swiss Jazz Orchestra , Christoph Walter Orchestra , Pe Werner , FatCat , Nicole Johänntgen , JazzAar 2016, Bruno Frey Nascimento 4 feat. Ben van Gelder , but also with Pirmin Huber , Heimweh , Alejandro Reyes , Andrea Bocelli and Helene Fischer . He was also the drummer in the Swiss Army Big Band under the direction of Edgar Schmid.
