Dipentodon sinicus is the only plant species of the monotypical genus Dipentodon in the family of the Dipentodontaceae within the small order of the Huerteales .

Occurrence

It is native to southern China and neighboring areas in Myanmar and northeast India . They usually grow in evergreen forests or on rivers and railway lines at altitudes between 900 and 3200 meters.

description

Dipentodon sinicus is a deciduous to semi- evergreen , small tree or shrub that reaches heights of growth of 3 to 10 (rarely up to 15) meters. The bark of the branches is purple-brown with a few lenticels . The alternate and two lines disposed leaves are 7 mm long stalked to 10 and easily. The leaf blade has a length of 7 to 15 (to 20) cm and a width of 2 to 9 cm. The leaf margin is sharply serrated. The stipules are about 1 cm in size with a finely serrated edge.

The mostly 4 to 7 (2.5 to 10) cm long, stalked, spherical, dold-like total inflorescences are composed of zymous partial inflorescences , contain four to five bracts , 25 to 30 flowers and have a diameter of 1.5 to 2.5 when fully opened cm up. The flower stalk is 5 to 10 mm long during the flowering period and continues to grow a little afterwards. The small (diameter 1 to 4 mm), hermaphrodite, radial symmetry flowers are five to seven-fold. The 10 to 14 upright, about 1 mm long bracts are only fused at their base. There are five to seven free, fertile stamens with about 2 mm long stamens and purple-colored about 0.4 mm long anthers . The nectar glands are thought to be the five to seven staminodes . Three fruit leaves are a hairy, Upper permanent ovary grown. The approximately 2 to 3 mm long stylus ends in a small, head-shaped scar. The flowering period extends from May to September.

The fruits are ripe between August and October. On the hairy, purple-brown, solitary capsule fruit , the stamens, the style, the sepals and petals are still preserved and are 6 to 10 mm in size. The blackish-brown seeds are 4 to 5 mm in size.

Systematics

This species was previously assigned to the Violales or Dilleniidae. In the monotypical genus Dipentodon Dunn there is only one species:

  • Dipentodon sinicus Dunn ( Syn . : Dipentodon longipedicellatus C.Y.Cheng & JSLiu )
