Dirk Horten

Dirk Horten (born December 14, 1939 ) is a Vice Admiral a. D. of the German Navy and was in command of the fleet from 1995 to 2000 .

Military career

Horten joined the German Navy in April 1958 as an officer candidate and was trained as an officer on watch on submarines and deployed as such. From September 1965 to September 1968 he was commander of the submarine U 8 of Class 205 and then to December 1968 commander of U 6 of the same class.

From October 1971 to September 1973 he took part in admiral staff training at the command academy of the Bundeswehr in Hamburg . Subsequently he became deputy commander and S3 staff officer of the 1st submarine squadron . Promoted to frigate captain on July 1, 1974 , he took over command of the 3rd submarine squadron on October 1, 1975 .

From August 1977 to September 1980, Horten was a consultant in the Federal Ministry of Defense . On October 1, 1980, he was promoted to captain at sea , and he became head of department in the staff of the German military representative at NATO's military committee in Brussels . From October 1983 to September 1986 Horten was group leader in the naval support command in Wilhelmshaven .

On October 1, 1986, Horten took over command of the submarine flotilla . On October 1, 1988 he was promoted to flotilla admiral and took over the role of department head in the naval support command. On October 1, 1989 he was deputy commander until March 1993. From October 1990 to April 1991 Horten was posted as commander of the Rostock naval command and at the same time naval commander of the Bundeswehr Command East. During this time he was responsible for taking over and integrating parts of the People's Navy into the German Navy.

On October 1, 1993, Horten, now as Rear Admiral , became Deputy Inspector of the Navy and Chief of Staff of the Naval Staff . On April 1, 1995 he was promoted to Vice Admiral and took over command of the fleet. He retired from this post on March 31, 2000.
